Subsequent sections suggest the primary factor to be considered in evaluating the ends of justice is the unusual or complex nature of the case. The majority characterize this case as one involving a conflict between a defendant's right to a speedy trial and his right to effective assistance of counsel. With all due respect, I believe that a careful examination of the realities of this case reveals no such conflict. Rather, the fundamental question at issue is whether a defendant's right to a speedy trial can in [15 Cal.3d 787] practice be denied to an indigent defendant by a county's appointment of a counsel who is too heavily burdened and overworked to bring the defendant's case to an expeditious trial.

Rebel Ligament

It was thereupon agreed between court and counsel that the matter be "trailed" or continued from day to day until such time as Millard became available. This "trailing" continued until November 12, on which day Millard appeared, announced he was "ready" for trial, but also explained to the court that he was "trailing" in another case, People v. Bond. Because the Bond matter was deemed by defense counsel to be the more pressing of the two, Millard once again requested that petitioner's case be trailed from day to day, pending his completion of the Bond trial. Millard stated to the court that he did not expect Bond to take more than an hour or two once trial began.

On November 15 he filed, in propria persona, a petition for writ of habeas corpus alleging a violation of his right to a speedy trial. Here, defendant's defense was not so "complex and myriad" that counsel needed additional time to prepare effectively for trial. 2 If the delay had resulted from such circumstances, then there would be some justification for the majority's characterization of the case as a conflict between defendant's right to a speedy trial and his right to effective counsel. Here, however, the delay ensued simply because the defense counsel was overburdened with other cases which took precedence over that of the defendant. On November 7 Millard was engaged in another trial and unable to make the scheduled appearance in petitioner's case. Deputy Public Defender Blum appeared on petitioner's behalf and informed the court of the reasons for Millard's absence.

Rebel Reliever

Furthermore, we need not concern ourselves with the validity of this contention since the assumption upon which it depends is the result of a misinterpretation of section 1382, subdivision 2, as we demonstrate below. On August 16 an information was filed in respondent court, charging petitioner with a violation of Health and Safety Code section (sale of a controlled substance), and further alleging a prior conviction under [15 Cal.3d 778] former Health and Safety Code section (possession of marijuana). A public defender was appointed to represent petitioner, and the matter was continued to August 29.

Patella Reliever

townsend design

Petitioner argues that when Deputy Public Defender Millard appeared on November 12 and announced that he was "ready" for trial, the 10-day grace period began. He asserts that while there may have been a one day "tolling" of the grace period during the interval between the 12th and the 18th (while the deputy public defender assigned to his case was in another trial), the 10 days having commenced on November 12 nevertheless expired prior to November 25. There is no authority, either in the language of section 1382, subdivision 2, or in case law to support petitioner's "tolling" theory.

Townsend Design makes a wide range of exceptional ligament/OA braces and supports for rehabilitation from orthopedic injuries. You'll find a variety of braces designed for upper extremity injuries and Townsend knee brace products for treating ligament sprains, reconstructions, and arthritic knee conditions. Since the defendant did not personally waive his right to a speedy trial, and since the statute interpreting the outer limits of the constitutional right to a speedy trial was violated over defendant's persistent objections, I would issue the writ. We consider the question -- did the consent of petitioner's counsel to the various extensions of time bind petitioner? If not, the 60-day period contemplated by section 1382 having elapsed, the calculation of the 10-day grace period becomes moot and the information must be dismissed.

All of Townsend’s Reliever Series OA knee braces, as well as the company’s ligament and specialty braces, are made in the US by experienced technicians and orthotic craftsmen. Nearly 50% of the fabrication team members who work at the company’s manufacturing center in Bakersfield, CA, have at least 10 years tenure at Townsend. In the matter before us we have concluded, as we develop below, that the requested relief must be denied since trial herein was finally set to commence within the 10-day period contemplated by section 1382, subdivision 2. California contractors are required to submit their fingerprints to the board, which are then checked against criminal records held by the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) prior to obtaining a valid contracting license.

While it is true that counsel indicated at the proceedings of November 7, 12 and 15, that he believed the 10-day period was expiring, such a statement was based on his erroneous interpretation of the statute, and did not constitute an objection to further continuances. If an affluent defendant chooses to employ a counsel who is involved in many other cases, then the courts, quite appropriately, can require the defendant to wait until his selected counsel is ready for trial; if the delay is unacceptable to the defendant, he can always engage another, less burdened attorney. If the public defender who is appointed to represent him is already handling so many cases that the defendant's case must "trail" beyond the 60-day period, the indigent necessarily loses his statutory right to a speedy trial. He must take his turn in the public defender's long line of undertakings and await a trial date after the expiration of the 60-day period contemplated by section 1382 when the beleaguered public defender has finally disposed of all the preceding cases.

Unlocking Real-World Skills for All Students

People like to hear success stories, so use this data to show how you are impacting students with these partnerships. Most of the time, if your design includes all components of what you are looking for from your future partnership, it will have a greater chance for success. He has worked in Career and Technical Education (CTE) for 10 years, first as a teacher and now as an assistant principal working with Denver Public Schools. Bradley’s passion is promoting STEM programs and education to girls and students of color. After the training, the group decided to keep in close contact and met at least once a month to have everyone contribute what they and their PLTW students were picking up.

Using the Design Process for Engineering Partnerships

They also explore different aspects of automation and robotics, and experience how solving real-life problems involves the teamwork of mechanical engineers, software developers, and electrical engineers. Students learn important aspects of building and site design and development. They apply math, science, and standard engineering practices to design both residential and commercial projects and document their work using 3D architecture design software.

It worked great – we were able to keep in touch and share our experiences. In addition, there were several members of the group who took leadership roles and ended up being the first Master Teachers in IED. In the early ‘90s, before PLTW officially formed, teachers at my school taught early versions of IED, Principles of Engineering (POE), and Digital Electronics (DE).

Years of PLTW's Introduction to Engineering Design

In 1996, my boss at the time, Dick Blais, left the district to work on getting PLTW off the ground. He had put together a very powerful advisory council that met frequently and helped raise the initial funding for PLTW, which got its start in 1997. Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, examine nervous system structure and function, and investigate disease outbreaks. Our programs are designed to empower students to thrive in an evolving world.

Engineering Design Process Comes to Life

pltw engineering design process

PLTW Engineering students adopt a problem-solving mindset, are engaged in compelling, real-world challenges that help them become better collaborators and thinkers, and are prepared with skills to step into any career path they take. I hope you received some ideas to help you as you make your way through the process of developing partnerships. Business partnerships are a key way to increase your PLTW program’s funding as well as provide students a way to interact with companies. Students are engaged in compelling, real-world challenges and are prepared with skills to step into any career path they take. PLTW Launch taps into students’ exploratory nature, engages them in learning that feels like play, and encourages them to keep discovering. Students at Dakota Meadows Middle School in Mankato, Minnesota, have been working diligently to design, build, test, document, and share puzzle cubes in Michael Schuldt’s classroom.

Students will customize their experience by choosing a problem that interests them from the areas of health, environment, emergency preparedness, education, community service, and school culture. Because problems in the real world involve more than one discipline, the unit will introduce students to biomedical science concepts as they work on solutions for the specific problems they choose to tackle. Students engage in an open-ended research experience in the PLTW Capstone course, a culminating program for those completing PLTW's high school offerings. They collaborate in teams, designing and developing original solutions to well-defined and justified real-world problems. Students explore the foundations of computing by engaging in circuit design processes to create combinational logic and sequential logic (memory) as electrical engineers do in industry. Students discover and explore manufacturing processes, product design, robotics, and automation, and then they apply what they have learned to design solutions for real-world manufacturing problems.

Our Approach to Standards Connection is Focused on Student Outcomes and Flexibility.

They also explore robot systems through projects such as remotely operated vehicles. Students explore the physics of flight and space through software simulations and hands-on experiences. They bring concepts to life by designing and testing an airfoil, propulsion system, and a rocket.

Students learn how these concepts apply to a career in aerospace engineering and other engineering fields. The knowledge and skills students acquire throughout PLTW Engineering come together in EDD as they identify an issue and then research, design, and test a solution, ultimately presenting their solution to a panel of engineers. Students apply the professional skills they have developed to document a design process to standards, completing EDD ready to take on any post-secondary program or career. Students are given the opportunity to combine mechanisms with input and output devices to automate the mechanisms. Construction and programming skills are layered, and projects and the problem provide students the opportunity to connect their learning throughout the lessons in the unit. Students take on the role of interns, and work in teams to identify design requirements and create prototypes to meet the needs of clients.

In PLTW Engineering, students engage in open-ended problem solving, learn and apply the engineering design process, and use the same industry-leading technology and software as are used in the world’s top companies. Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work. This course propels students’ learning in the fundamentals of atmospheric and space flight. As they explore the physics of flight, students bring the concepts to life by designing an airfoil, propulsion system, and rockets.

Many students have come back after college and thanked me for turning them on to a successful career in engineering. They will usually also bring up a favorite PLTW project from our class time together. Terry C. Nagy Jr. is a longtime teacher at Shenendehowa High School, located in the New York school district where the first PLTW courses were developed two decades ago.

Students are technology trailblazers who are empowered through transportable skills and prepared to start any career. Furthermore, when I was a Master Teacher, I got to meet many great educators from around the country and received great feedback after summer training was over. I have had several PLTW Professional Development participants tell me that they were about to leave teaching, but PLTW was changing their minds.

Your contractor will either confirm or deny that your ideal remodel is possible within your preferred budget. They do not like toilet partitions that have gaps and allow people to see into the stall. Toilet partition manufactures have embraced this change and are providing new options for no-site partitions.

The small details reflect that state-of-the-art style, so don’t leave them out of your design plans. Solid surface countertops usually consist of acrylic and polyester particles and are shaped to resemble stone. This material is low-maintenance and resists stains, making it a great cost-effective option for high-traffic public restrooms. Incorporating a mix of materials such as smooth ceramics, rough stone, and brushed metals can add depth and visual interest to a commercial bathroom. Textured wall panels or tiles offer a tactile element that can elevate the user experience. Exploring the world of small commercial bathroom design isn’t a task for the faint-hearted, with the vast array of existing ideas out there.

A maximalist approach turns a small commercial bathroom into a vibrant showcase of patterns, textures, and colors. This style embraces a mix of ornate fixtures, bold wallpaper, and eclectic art to create a visually stimulating environment. Strategically placed LED lights make small commercial bathrooms appear larger and more welcoming. They offer energy efficiency, lowering overhead costs while providing bright, adjustable lighting that can enhance the ambience of the space. You’ll end up with a plan and materials list that you can take to the county for the plan check and to contractors to get their bids for the work. You can expect to pay an architect/designer 10–20% of your project budget, depending on how much work they do for you.

The amount of traffic you expect your restroom to see once again becomes relevant since it will directly relate to how much water is used from the taps and toilets. Make estimates of how many people you expect to use the bathrooms and average one or two flushes per person. Dark mood designs in a commercial bathroom create an atmosphere of sophistication and modernity. Terrazzo style tiling infuses character into commercial bathrooms by blending chips of marble, quartz, granite, or glass into a cementitious binder. These tones help create a more intimate space, counteracting the often sterile feel of public restrooms. Their sleek design adds a modern touch while optimizing space usage in small commercial bathroom environments.

One such example is Lauxes Grates’ Slimline Tile Insert, an aluminium linear drainage solution with a hollow top tray to insert a tile and give an “invisible drainage” look. And while basic accessibility as defined by the ADA is a great start, many organizations are taking it further by considering the needs of visitors who have an even wider range of needs. Adult-sized changing tables are an example—they're not mandated by the ADA, but there are still people who need them. Studies have found that an unlidded flush creates a toilet plume, an aerosol cloud that can contain infectious microorganisms.

Make sure your cleaning staff has a regular cleaning schedule and that there are ample trash cans and air fresheners in place. Its functionality, paired with its sleek, sophisticated design made it an ideal choice for the SPDB headquarters. According to the supplier, one of the key benefits of this product is that it’s made from anodised aluminium, making it lightweight and easy to cut while remaining strong and durable. The use of aluminium also prevents the tile insert from rusting; an issue prevalent in older drainage solutions that are often made of stainless steel. To help make your facility investments valuable in the long term, it's important to look to the future, even as you weigh the demands of the present.

Considering that these aerosol plumes can remain airborne and travel with air currents, putting a lid on it seems worthwhile. And in new construction, forward-thinking planners are looking for ways to streamline hygienic restroom exits by eliminating the doors entirely. Doorless entrances can use maze-like turns or S curves, which are already in use in many airport restrooms. It’s also wise to choose materials that can withstand bleach or other harsh cleaning and disinfecting chemicals when necessary. Consider these six strategies to channel your restroom design planning in the right direction.

The act also dictates how many of your stalls need to be big enough to accommodate wheelchairs, which direction the stall doors should open and how high sinks should be. Depending on your public restroom dimensions, you’ll need to consider the best way to control odor. Good ventilation is the best way to do this since a suitable ventilation system will also keep the bathroom from being too humid or moist, which can lead to bacterial and fungal growth.

Connected sensors in restroom equipment can alert cleaning staff when product levels are low, preventing outages. These sensors can also supply usage data that reveals traffic patterns and takes the guesswork out of scheduling custodial staff. To eliminate these visual cues, it’s important to plan for the right level of custodial attention, and it’s also important to know as soon as possible when problems emerge.

And later, fans are treated to a guttural growl from Joe, making the song even more unforgettable – and securing its status as a potential fan favorite off The Album. Well, it’s named after the restaurant and the irreplaceable memories that the brothers had in the establishment. The group also shared a statement on how their track has a personal meaning attached. In my own weird world, I was envisioning the Jonas Brothers as these older, final form, evolved Pokémon.

It sets the stage for the launch of their sixth full-length record, The Album, on May 12. I keep making the songs that I’m thinking about putting out, and then I end up being blessed enough to be connected with an artist that says, “Hey, I’d love to put this out and make it a first single and send it out to the world.” I don’t really plan; I don’t even think I know about tomorrow. ” At this point, I’m very positive in my gut that I’m supposed to wake up, have a great schedule, do what I love to do, provide for my family and be blessed enough to make a living from it. The bros are such geniuses in a way that they said, “We want to rip the Band-Aid off now. We want our fans to come with us.” We had to make an album that’s going to allow for them to make six more albums, rather than an album that feels like, “OK, we have to stop making our music now because we’re not as young as we were.” We said, “How do we make something that kind of begins their career? Below, Bellion reflects on what it was like to create the trio’s latest hit, opens up on his thought process behind releasing solo music, and more.

After weeks of teasing, the trio released the new song, which is named after the popular food chain of the same name, on Friday. I was very frightened that [fans] are set in their ways and can only allow the Jonas Brothers to be one thing. I was expecting this wave of, “Oh my God, what are they doing? ” It was amazing once it went No. 1 on the [Top] Album Sales chart and seeing the amount of people who were like, “Wow, I’m a new Jonas Brothers fan.” Their regular fans were like, “I think I’m in love with this album top to bottom.” It became this feel-good playlist all the way through and people started to embrace it.

Trending on Billboard

Yet one of the best transitions occurred between the band’s 2020 single “What a Man Gotta Do” and its 2007-released “That’s Just the Way We Roll.” A pivot so seamless it managed to jump entire decades. It’s no secret Kevin, Nick and Joe can sing – and sound their best when harmonizing with one another. There was no stronger proof of this than on the set’s first-half closer, “Walls.” After live-debuting the song on SNL, it sounded even stronger now.

Maybe one day I’ll return — and I do have some songs on the side. I have a bunch of songs that people have tried to cut, but they can’t because they’re just too personal to me. Whether I get the credit or not, as long as the train keeps moving and my ideas are respected and I get to be creative and express myself every day, I think I’ve won already. The show’s second half, of course, operated like a well-oiled machine as the brothers churned out hit after hit, oftentimes without the music ever really ending or the stage lights fully dimming.

Additionally, the group will be returning to NBC’s Saturday Night Live stage as musical guest for the third time this Saturday, April 8 alongside host Molly Shannon. The show will be available to watch live courtesy of NBC and Peacock. Tonight, April 7, they’ll make an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to talk about their upcoming Saturday Night Live performance, Yankee Stadium show, and The Album. “Waffle House” is the second and final single from the Jonas Brothers' sixth studio album, The Album, following the release of February 2022’s “Wings.” Lyrically, the boys call back to their issues and competition with one another as siblings and also reminisce on the happy moments that also came.

The group will kick off their nationwide tour at Yankee Stadium in New York City on Aug. 12, where they will play a three-hour set.

During the tracking week ending May 13, 2023, the song debuted at #88 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. During the tracking week ending May 20, 2023, the song reached a new peak of #57. Fans can access the venue presale Wednesday, April 3 at 10 a.m. Via Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood’s Facebook, X and Instagram. Tickets are available at Doors open one hour before showtime. Among many accolades, they’ve recently claimed a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Available day and night, innovative menus include fresh, inspiring cuisine served daily, alongside award-winning wine lists.

Tickets are available via general on-sale on Friday, April 14 at 10AM ET. "Growing up, we would go to Waffle House after shows, and it became our sanctuary," the statement read. "It was the place we dreamt up ideas, the place where we worked through our problems together, and the place where we finally realized we could find our way through anything as long as we came together." "It's about coming together with the people you love...." Take, for example, The Album‘s second single, “Waffle House” — co-written and co-produced by Bellion — which peaked at No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Backed by a six-person chorus, the song’s powerful ending seemed to electrify the room, feeling much like a long-loved classic – thus serving as a perfect connector between the new album and the upcoming second hits-filled half. “Waffle House” features what might just be the band’s stickiest hook ever as it documents “Deep conversations at the Waffle House.” Their hummable harmonies and slick instrumentation define this anthemic song. Already a fan favorite online, the trio initially debuted “Waffle House” live during the last night of their critically acclaimed, sold-out Broadway Residency. The record is the second single from the Jonas Brothers' upcoming sixth studio effort, "The Album," due out May 12. The Jonas Brothers are less than a week away from dropping their sixth studio collection, The Album. The 12-song tracklist is slated to arrive on Friday, May 12, before the sibling trio embarks on their much-anticipated North America tour.

An investment of more than $125 million, the 7,000-person capacity indoor venue features clamshell-style seating, offering guests an intimate experience. In 2023, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood won an Academy of Country Music Award in the Casino of the Year – Theater Category. Hard Rock Live also ranked No. 3 and No. 5 in 2023 gross revenue for Pollstar Magazine and Billboard, respectively. Designed by Scéno Plus, the 225,000-square-foot facility is equipped with state-of-the-art, in-house sound and lighting, large HD viewing screens and mobile-stage technology.

As the infectious song kicks in, the three begin making their way to each other, but not before breaking into the most choreography they’ve danced to since their Camp Rock days. The award-winning musicians previously said that the sticky diner was their “sanctuary,” where they also developed some of their best ideas. While writing the upbeat track that sonically targets each band member’s specific sound, the frontman said they bounced the idea off of other individuals in the industry. Global pop icons, Jonas Brothers, are coming to Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood Friday, Aug. 2 at 8 p.m. “It’s about to get real sexy in here, c’mon now,” added Nick before opening the track in his forceful falsetto over a groovy bass guitar lick.

Mary Mac's Tea Room in Atlanta is a Must-Visit Southern Institution

All types come to Atlanta's dining room. An upstart rapper and his crew might be seated next to Georgia's Attorney General. A man in a MAGA hat might be sipping tea next to a Biden campaign manager.

Mary Mac's Tea Room roof collapse: Iconic Atlanta restaurant closed 'temporarily'

It’s one of the few places where true nonpartisanship and harmony exists. Not only will you find patrons of all types sitting all throughout the six rooms of the restaurant, but the halls are littered with hundreds of photos and newspaper clippings that truly show no allegiance. There are photos of former Georgia governors Nathan Deal and Sonny Perdue, national politicians like Jimmy Carter, John Lewis, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and even the freaking Dalai Lama! There’s even a chaotic mix of sports teams memorabilia, from West Virginia’s football team to Florida State University basketball. This is an institution lifted to remarkable heights by countless remarkable women. From the first two owners (Mary MacKenzie and Margaret Lupo) to dozens of staff members,  the impressive power of women runs through every inch of the restaurant.

In 1972, even after serving multiple bank presidents in her dining room daily for a decade, Lupo was still unable to get a bank loan as she slowly bought up the block of businesses to expand her 75-seat place. Lupo again relied on family funds and borrowing on her home and car. It's what Mary would have wanted. It was the end of World War II and enterprising women were in search of a living. Many women, after the war, were widowed. Many needed to find ways to become breadwinners.

They aren't going to seat you if your party isn't all there and you're all streaming in all willy-nilly. They'll call your name once or twice but if you don't come running to get seated, they'll pass you by. There's a buzzy anticipation there, as you wait, that something good is happening.

President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter have eaten at Mary Mac’s so often through the decades, the president has a dessert named after him. The peanut custard, first introduced during Carter’s gubernatorial campaign, was initially called Jimmy Carter Custard, rebranded as Presidential Pudding during Carter’s White House years and is now simply, Carter Custard. In 1972, Lupo’s husband Harvey quit his day job to become the restaurant’s host and buyer.

She then proceeded to rattle off well over a dozen must-haves. Served family, all you care to eat, dine in only for parties of 2 or more. Entire table must choose the Southern Special.

Several years back, Martin, Jr. asked Ferrell to give him first crack at buying the business if Ferrell ever decided to sell. Martin, Jr. is now the CEO of the Taco Mac chain of restaurants and is also a former interim president of Morehouse. Harold never forgot the Southern hospitality or the legendary food (the pork chops are his go-to), and eventually made an offer to purchase the restaurant. John ran the business like a well-oiled machine, providing fabulous experiences to over 10,000 visitors a day. However, in the face of COVID-19 in March 2020, he made the challenging decision to close the restaurant for the safety of the staff and guests. Afternoon tea also proves a wonderful social occasion for the sober community.

Mary MacKenzie opened Mary Mac’s Tea Room in 1945 on Ponce de Leon Avenue, just east of the historic Fox Theatre on Peachtree Street. It was one of 16 tearooms in Atlanta at the time and seated just 75 people. Since its opening, the restaurant has expanded several times to accommodate hundreds of people in its six dining rooms. At its busiest, Mary Mac’s was serving 2,000 people a day and ordering truck loads full of fresh vegetables, including 25 bushels of corn, 25 bushels of green beans and 25 bushels of collards and turnip greens per week. Today, that commitment to freshness continues with all vegetables being shucked, washed and snapped daily. Before the COVID shutdown, the 13,000-square-foot restaurant, was making nearly $10 million in annual sales, making it one of the city’s largest restaurants.

Our guests from Atlanta and beyond have supported Mary Mac’s Tea Room for more than 75 years, and we are dedicated to reopening and continuing Mary Mac’s legacy of Southern food and hospitality for years to come. On Wednesday, March 6, 2024, the roof above the Skyline dining room of Mary Mac’s Tea Room collapsed due to heavy rains. We are incredibly grateful that no one was injured, and that the vast majority of our beloved restaurant was not impacted. The restaurant celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.

Rival Midtown tea room operator Mary McKinsey eventually bought the Ponce de Leon Avenue restaurant in 1951 but didn’t change the name to reflect its new owner until 1953. An official with the department said firefighters responded just before 4 a.m., following storms and heavy rain overnight. Officials have not confirmed exactly what caused the partial collapse. Second, he was not going to change a thing about the restaurant or its menu. Her diligence elevated the Mary Mac’s experience to the stratospheric level from which it hasn’t dropped since. With that in mind, here are 15 of the best places to pop in for a cuppa, or host a full-blown tea soirée.

Loved Mary Mac’s cornbread so much trainers used to order dozens of loaves at a time for the zoo’s most famous resident. In order to keep guests and staff safe due to COVID, the restaurant at 224 Ponce de Leon Ave. in Midtown shuttered back in March. Some longtime regulars worried it might be for good. Today, the restaurant is the only tearoom that remains and has expanded to more than 13,000 square feet with six dining rooms. Explore Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House Buffalo, NY

The plan, laid out in a rule that passed on Friday, was concocted to capitalize on the pools of support for each part of the $95 billion package, while preventing opposition to any one piece from taking down all of them. The House passed a long-stalled foreign aid package on Saturday that gives funding to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, with a majority of lawmakers backing money for American allies across the globe. The package, which now goes to the Senate, is almost certain to become law. Frank Lloyd Wright’s connection to Arizona, the location of his personal winter home Taliesin West, runs deep, with his architectural influence seen all over the Valley. Here, PhD student David R. Richardson gives a brief overview of several of Wright’s most notable projects in the Grand Canyon state.

Location

I personally am thinking of relocating to this area for cheaper housing and great culture. During this Targaryen Civil War, George R.R. Martin killed off half the population of Westeros and, as noted previously, nearly every member of the blondest family. However, the HBO series has already tweaked parts of the book, so there’s no reason to believe that everything will go down as Martin wrote in the lore. Queen Alicent and Otto Hightower will definitely begin to see consequences of their long game, and Rhaenyra will be coming for the Iron Throne with Blood and Cheese (wait for them, oh boy) paving the way. With that said, this series has been plotted out for four seasons, and that plan could change, but it’s unlikely that we will see the entire war take place in Season 2. Hopefully, we will at least see the inevitable showdown between Daemon and (Mini-Me) Aemond, and if that plot point follows the Fire and Blood book, both men should be very afraid.

Mission

Last year, the couple purchased the 1950 Zimmerman house, designed by the architect Craig Ellwood, in Los Angeles’s Brentwood neighborhood for $12.5m. The residence, with landscaping by Garrett Eckbo – who has been described as the pioneer of modern landscaping – had previously been featured in Progressive Architecture magazine. The Martin House / Graycliff Experience allows guests to take in the complete story of Frank Lloyd Wright and the Martin family. Your ticket includes a two-hour tour of both Wright-designed estates and a boxed lunch provided at the Martin House to enjoy on site or take on the road. The multi-structure estate ( ) that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for Darwin D. Martin is a masterpiece of 20th century architecture. The Martin House is widely considered one of Wright’s finest Prairie houses – a signature work from the early years of his celebrated career.

Architecture

A pergola connects the home to a conservatory and carriage house with chauffeur’s quarters and stables, while a smaller residence and gardener’s cottage sit nearby. Over the decades, the complex suffered considerable damage and three of the original five buildings were destroyed, but in 1992, the Martin House Restoration Corporation was formed to raise funds and oversee a complete restoration. Extensive reconstruction efforts began in 1997 and are ongoing today, but visitors can now experience the property on a variety of tours.

The Piece of Cheese Cottage

The so-called Samuel Freeman house is made from 12,000 concrete bricks, which incorporated sand from the hillside sloping down below it. These are assembled in the “textile block” style, which evokes the appearance of quilted stone. Samuel and Harriet Freeman fell in love with Wright’s architecture as guests at the Hollyhock House. There are many ways to support the Martin House – become a member, attend a fundraiser, support an education program, shop in our store, or fund an art glass window. No matter how you give, you are advancing our mission to preserve, interpret, promote, and sustain the Martin House for future generations. The Statler Café is located off Summit Avenue on the north end of the estate. You are welcome to come explore the landscape and the exterior of the buildings.

One of Frank Lloyd Wright's greatest—and favorite—architectural masterpieces was almost lost.

Video of the property from December 2022 shows a light-filled home that appears to have been well-preserved, with large windows, wood floors and mid-century furniture. It was abandoned, partially demolished, and neglected in the period following the Martins’ life there. With the resolve of many, an ambitious restoration effort to save this treasure began in earnest in 1992 and was completed in 2019. Today, Martin House stands as a compelling symbol of civic identity and cultural pride. It is a National Historic Landmark and a premier heritage destination within New York State’s network of historic sites.

Specifications: Martin Lawrence House

The lost structures were rebuilt, and the Martin House was painstakingly restored to its original, nigh-perfect beauty. The interior spaces of the historic houses are accessible on guided tours. Constructed between 1903 and 1905, the estate attracts visitors from all over the world to Buffalo, New York – a city full of early 20th-century masterworks from some of the world’s most famous architects.

Today the Martin House has been completely-restored to its former magnificence in the most ambitious restoration of a Frank Lloyd Wright site ever undertaken. Three of the original elements — the pergola, conservatory and carriage house, which were demolished decades ago – are rebuilt in the first-ever reconstruction of Wright buildings. Although the movie isn’t set in the picturesque seaside town, director Emerald Fennell has said that the name—which refers in the movie to a sprawling country estate—was inspired by the North Yorkshire location. On Saltburn-by-the-Sea and growing interest in the area from out-of-towners, investors and creatives, Saltburn is having a bit of a moment. The single-story home and its grounds have since been cleared and in its place will be a massive home in the modern farmhouse style that has come to dominate US suburbs. While all Democrats voted in favor of aid to Ukraine and all but Ms. Tlaib supported funding to Taiwan, 37 left-leaning Democrats defected to vote against the Israel aid bill.

First, Daemon must zoom around Westeros to gather as many houses as possible for that fight. I suspect that the strategy set-up will take up much of this second season, but unlike with the book, Rhaenyra might even leave Dragonstone to participate. And we will literally see fire rain down from the sky when the two sides have to force allegiance from reluctant settlements. Todd said the fire happened on Meathouse Road in the Pilgrim community. Potentially a sizable return on investment when it comes to real estate. Welcome to Martin House at Adamsville, an income-based, senior apartment community located just outside the heart of Atlanta.

Approximately 27,000 blocks were used in the construction, which were cast by hand, on-site, with an aluminum mold and made out of gravel, granite, sand (from the site) and water. It took ten days for each block to fully dry and cure before it could be used. Brilliantly proportioned rooms flow effortlessly from one to another.

We understand that as seniors, you’re looking for a budget-friendly place to call home, and we’re here to provide just that. With a host of features and benefits that are well-suited to meet your needs, Martin House at Adamsville ensures you can live comfortably and independently. Photos are fairly scarce, but on-line listings show a living room anchored by a corner fireplace sporting a marble surround, along with a spacious dining room/workspace that sits adjacent to a kitchen outfitted with newer stainless appliances. A hallway leads to the bedrooms, which include a primary suite boasting a private balcony and spa-inspired bath. The city’s SurveyLA program had identified the property as potentially historic, but no protections were afforded, the conservancy wrote on Instagram. An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the political party of a group of representatives who notably voted “no” on new aid for Israel.

Wright himself referred to the Martin House as “the opus” and kept the site plan pinned to his drawing table for close to fifty years. Though he already owns one Los Angeles home, Martin Short has plumped up his real estate portfolio with yet another residence. Originally listed in March for around $2.4 million, Short scored a slight deal on the property.

When you read radial, you probably think of the sun, and that’s no mistake. To create a radial design, pick a central focal point, and place all the content so that it radiates out from that point. Most of the time, you won’t actually have a big fat line running across your page, instead, you’ll just imply your axis with text. I’d bet anything that you haven’t seen any designs using an axial layout system, or a transitional system. You can make the squares any size you want and arrange them in any way you want. I suggest using modular designs for pieces of content that are already cut up. You can easily create the right system to fit the exact operational requirements and needs of a client. The intuitive maps-feature in AXIS Site Designer allows you to add floorplans or maps of the target site, so you can place cameras and devices and view the coverage they will provide. AXIS/GFA's Los Angeles studio's design of this property won the developer a Marriott International Development of the Year award. Any object or structure that has two similar shapes when a central line passes through it is said to be symmetrical.

This television may turn toward either side of the wall because it has a real central axis and a pole. The television’s equal sides are symmetrical on either side of the axis. Community centre design has been the focus of our work for much of this year, with one project just completed in Cotteridge Park and two more about to start on site at Witton Lakes and Edgbaston Reservoir. While on a cruise you may be getting too much sun and even drinking too many alcoholic drinks, which can lead to becoming dehydrated. There are also non-prescription seasickness prevention patches available, that many use and find effective. An over the counter medication like Bonine or Dramamine, can be highly effective to deal with symptoms of seasickness, so you can enjoy your cruise. They can provide personalized advice and guidance based on your specific needs and medical history. They are a preventative treatment, and should be used ideally before symptoms begin, and need to be changed every 3 days. They may only be available by prescription, so talk with your doctor to see if they’re right for you.

Even if you don’t end up using it, it’s better to have it on hand if things get a little bumpy. If you have successfully worn scopolamine patches in the past without side effects, consider only wearing one the first 24 hours of the cruise or when rough seas are expected. As noted, children under 2 typically do not experience motion sickness, while the incidence appears to peak at age 9. If you need to use medication for your child, always speak with your pediatrician first. Almost all pediatric medications are weight-based, and some may have age restrictions, as well.

Other Dramamine and Bonine (Meclizine) Considerations

Another option is scopolamine, which is commonly known as the round patch placed behind one’s ear. Look for green Granny Smith apples; their pectin combined with natural sugars reduces acid and settles topsy-turvy stomachs. Opting for plain water with electrolytes added – like coconut water – will keep your hydration balanced without causing unwanted side effects. While there is limited scientific evidence of their effectiveness, many people find them helpful as a non-invasive alternative to medication. While some people feel better standing up, others feel better lying down. If you’re unsure which position suits you best, you should try switching positions whenever you can to see if one feels better than another.

An avid traveler, she often trots the globe with her husband and their twins. Alesandra holds a master's degree in journalism with an emphasis on cultural reporting and criticism from NYU, and a bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley. Our goal has been to provide our readers with expansive coverage of all aspects of the Royal Caribbean experience. Growing up traveling around the world, she developed a passion for diversity and cross-cultural communication.

While that might not be true, eating apples can alleviate seasickness—but not just any apple, though. These glasses can raise heart rate and blood pressure, triggering symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, etc., making it difficult to enjoy your time at sea. Picking the right cabin to stay at goes a long way in balancing out your seasickness. We’ve found that the best cabins to book from are those present on the middle or lower deck. And while some people are more prone to seasickness than others, it’s still something that could ruin your boat trip. It’s important to note that alternative remedies and techniques may have varying degrees of effectiveness for different individuals.

What may also come to mind is motion sickness for those who suffer from it, which is almost everybody at some point. And if you were to take Dramamine after your motion sickness has taken effect, it’ll still take 30 minutes to an hour before you feel any relief. Below, we cover each point in further detail to help you figure out the best course of action for your seasickness.

Use Acupressure Bands

You can put your wristband on before traveling or as you begin to feel nauseated. Reviewers have found these wristbands are also effective at curing sea-sickness and morning sickness, and were great to use with kids. These herbal motion sickness patches are a great natural alternative to prescription drugs. Hundreds of reviewers swear by them, citing their ability to keep nausea, dizziness and vomiting at bay. The patch goes behind your ear and helps your body acclimate to an unstable environment. These patches aren't waterproof, so make sure you change them after taking a shower or a dip in the pool.

Medical experts note that seasickness is more common in children and women, while interestingly, children under the age of two appear to be immune. Motion sickness is caused by a conflict between the sensory systems in our body. When we are on a cruise ship, our eyes see the interior of the ship as stable, but our inner ears, responsible for balance and spatial orientation, sense the movement of the ship.

They help to balance the body by way of pressure points on your wrists, leaving you free to enjoy the ebb and flow of the ocean without having to run to a bathroom. The bands are washable, too, so they won't be rendered useless if you get them wet in the ocean or pool. Finding the best motion sickness medicine for your cruise is essential to ensure a smooth and enjoyable voyage. Whether you opt for prescription medications or over-the-counter remedies, it's crucial to prioritize your comfort and well-being while at sea. And while you're making preparations for your next cruise adventure, don't forget to turn to Cruisebound, your trusted online platform for booking cruises and discovering the best cruise deals. Otherwise, you'll rely on finding marked-up pricing of drugstore finds in the ship's shopping corridor.

Although most individuals feel better after using these medicines, some patients get little benefit from them. Numerous research supports the fact that antihistamines provide relief to many people. Formulated with non-drowsy ingredients, it won’t cause side effects and can be used before you even feel sick, making it a great preemptive measure! Available in a pack of 24 gummies, this sea sickness medicine comes in convenient packaging, making it easy to carry with you on your next adventure.

Gary Shteyngart: Crying Myself to Sleep on the Icon of the Seas

independence of the seas cruise ship

As I've written about before, I'm not a huge fan of the cruise ship buffet. But for a mass-market cruise ship, Independence of the Seas has a pretty great buffet. Royal Caribbean excels at passenger flow on its ships, which makes its megaships feel manageable. Independence of the Seas is easy to navigate, and I rarely had the "you can't get there from here" experience I've had on other cruise lines.

Playmaker's

“It is only pendejo dining today, sir.” “But I have a suite! ” I say, already starting to catch on to the ship’s class system. I am wearing a DADDY’S LITTLE MEATBALL T-shirt, I want to say to him. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site. Rates are in USD and valid for US and Canadian residents only. When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S.

Inside Cabin

On the other side of the casino, the nautical-themed Schooner's is the place to go for piano singalongs and trivia (usually catering to an older crowd). The desert pear margarita is popular, though I preferred the lavender martini. Sushi seating can only be done on board in person at the restaurant. Pricing is a la carte, though you can pay a flat rate of $39.99 and receive half rolls with each order. Hibachi reservations should be made as far in advance as possible.

The Royal Babies & Tots Nursery entertains the youngest cruisers for a fee, but kids ages 3 and up can enjoy supervised fun for free at Adventure Ocean. The different groups of kids — Aquanauts (ages 3-5), Explorers (6-8) and Voyagers (9-11) — have their own play space, but depending on the number of children on board, they might get play time in another age group's space. Tweens and teens ages 12 to 17 can play video games and hang out in The Living Room and show off their dance moves in the Fuel teen nightclub.

Independence had as much variety in the evening as at lunchtime, with gluten-free and interesting international (mostly Asian and Indian) stations, as well as a well-stocked salad bar and always-available burgers and hot dogs. Daily-rotating themed stations offered interesting options, such as Jamaican food on the night I stopped by. You can get a good preview of the cruise ahead of you by lingering at the pool deck buffet on embarkation day.

Independence of the Seas is also very similar to sister ship Freedom of the Seas. They’re both part of the Freedom class and virtually carbon copies of each other. The only main difference between them is that Independence has a Sky Pad, which the Freedom does not. Independence of the Seas is the third and final of Royal Caribbean's ground-breaking Freedom-class ships -- once the largest in the world before the launch of Oasis of the Seas and its sister ships. Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year.

Independence of the Seas Bars and Drinks

One of the most popular venues on the Promenade is the Cafe Promenade. Your protein comes naked on the plate, so dress it up with sauces and sides, not to mention appetizers, soups, salads and dessert. The pretzel mini-baguettes and mushroom soup are not to be missed. A meal costs $62.99 for dinner ($14.99 for kids ages 6-12) and $26.99 for lunch. The heart of Independence of the Seas' dining lineup is its three-deck-high main dining room, with a Shakespearean decor theme.

Sadly, the SS Independence made her last trip across the ocean in February 2008 when she was towed out to sea from San Francisco. In 2009, the classic ship the SS Independence was scrapped at the Alang, India ship scrapyard. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. In addition, average cruise prices are updated nightly.

Everything I ordered was delicious, from the bright green arugula salad starter to the gnocchi gorgonzola pasta (save your stomach and order a half portion!) and perfectly cooked branzino fish. You could probably skip dessert here, but a companion and I enjoyed the chocolate-hazelnut cake and panna cotta with strawberry and basil flavors. Independence of the Seas has three marquee, extra-fee specialty restaurants and a host of fee-free and a la carte casual options.

The Icon of the Seas is the Linda Loman of cruise ships, exclaiming that attention must be paid. The SS Independence was originally launched during the heyday of ocean travel of the 1950's but was treated to more than $78 million in refurbishments from 1994 to 2001 by her various owners. The ship is one of the few major cruise ships built in the United States, having been constructed at the Bethlehem Steel Company in Quincy, Massachusetts for American Export Lines of New York.

Among best "fun hits" on the ship are the surfing simulator, and all the "ice skating" and "rock-climbing" activities. For adults, there is plenty of space for sports activities (modern fitness center, and even a boxing ring), many bars and lounges, the adult-only Solarium area. The ship is divided into three sections, top to bottom. The upper decks (11 to 15) are where you'll find all the outdoor fun and activities, as well as the buffet and spa. The middle decks (6 to 10) contain exclusively cabins and suites, so you can ignore all of these except the deck where your room is located.

(Only Suites are granted these robes to begin with.) Today, I will try many of the activities these ships have on offer to provide their clientele with a sense of never-ceasing motion. Storm Chasers consists of falling from the “mast” down a long, twisting neon tube filled with water, like being the camera inside your own colonoscopy, as you hold on to the handles of a mat, hoping not to die. The tube then flops you down headfirst into a trough of water, a Royal Caribbean baptism. There is a middle-aged African American couple who always seem to be asleep in each other’s arms, probably exhausted from the late capitalism they regularly encounter on land.

If you want to toast your good fortune in your cabin, you're good, but if you want to bring your preferred vintage to a restaurant or lounge, you'll need to pay a $15 corkage fee. Royal Caribbean guests of legal drinking age can bring one bottle of wine or Champagne onto Independence of the Seas at boarding, plus up to a dozen standard cans, bottles or cartons of nonalcoholic drinks such as sodas. Certain suite guests and upper-tier loyalty program members receive complimentary Wi-Fi, so know your included perks before you sign up for a package. Often you can get the best discounts on onboard Wi-Fi by purchasing your plans online in advance of your cruise. Members of Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society cruise loyalty program may also be eligible for discounts on Wi-Fi packages.
